Comparing two Commerce sites

The first E-Commerce website I will be looking at is Red hall.co.uk, the second website I will be looking at is Amazon.co.uk

Red hall hotel
Is the website easy to navigate/understandable e.g. what is the layout like?
The homepage for the red hall gives a small overview of the hotel e.g. how many rooms it has, where it is, and gives a small description of the surrounding area. The hotel also has understandable titles/drop down lists, which give an overview of what to t expect when you click on it. At the bottom of the screen there are links to events that have happened previously and also the main links a customer will want to see. The red hall hotel also includes a page titled “about us” which includes an FAQ and a page about what to do in the area. It is fairly easy to navigate with its drop down lists

How much content does the website have/how much detail is included? What media and objects does it have?
The level of detail provided on the company and the facilities it has includes all of the basic information about red hall including the facilities and amount of rooms. It also has the telephone number of the hotel and also the email address so a customer can contact them at any time. They also have the address for the hotel at the bottom of the screen which you can also view on a map. The red hall also includes images of all their rooms and what the business looks like inside and out, as discussed before it includes objects such as links using drop down lists.

How much whitespace does the website have?
The red hall his large amounts of white space on some of its website pages, this is a pro and a con as it shows they have a lot to talk about on some pages, that they don’t want to overload a customer with information. However pages with little to no whitespace on them may confuse a customer.

Typography: the style and appearance of printed matter.
The website uses a standard font, it is set out correctly with appropriate line spacing and a good font size so that it is easy to read but not so large that the information would take up two full pages. This allows the customer/reader of the website to take in large amounts of information with ease so that they don’t have to go to three different pages of the website just have an understanding of one thing.

Golden ratio
The golden ratio on red halls website is perfect, the writing on their websites are the right size so that it is easy to read but also not too big that it takes up lots of space up on the webpage. The layout of their navigation bars and the background go perfectly with the rest of the website.

Search engine optimization - Is it easy to find on when googled?
The red hall website is easy to find on google, it is even suggested as a search option when you type in red hall. It is also at the top of the list of links on google search.

Lloyds bank
Is the website easy to navigate/understandable e.g. what is the layout like?
The layout of Lloyds bank is quite consistent, this means that the information on the website is easy to understand and it is also easy to navigate, it also means that the layout they have chosen works seamlessly with their website and the usability of the website is also good. Their website has the navigation drop down lists in the same place and the color of all of their webpages is also the same which makes the website look professional.

How much content does the website have/how much detail is included? What media and objects does it have?
Lloyds bank includes lots of different content on their website, however they have separate webpages so that they do not clutter up their webpages and make it confusing to read for their customers. The content on their individual webpages is easy to read and gets straight to the point will being clear about the information that is on there. They also include the most asked question on their homepage so that customers don't have to scroll down or click on multiple webpages just to get an answer to their question.

How much whitespace does the website have?
Lloyds bank uses whitespace very efficiently meaning that there is not too much space that is not being used but also not a small amount of space that is left for them to use. Lloyds bank have created a relaxed atmosphere using the right amount of whitespace so that their customers do not feel overwhelmed with information.

Typography: the style and appearance of printed matter.
The Lloyds bank website has used the perfect font for the amount of information they are putting on the page, they have also used a font which can be read by pretty much everyone so that they gain more customers.  This allows the to take in large amounts of information with ease so they don’t have to go to three different pages of the website just have an understanding of one thing.

Golden ratio
Lloyds bank uses the correct font on their website and they are also using their signature background color which may show that they haven't changed which can be a good thing as older generation may recommend their bank to their children or grand children on the assumption that it hasn't changed that much and that it is a reliable and trustworthy bank.

Evaluation of both Commerce websites

Red Hall
My evaluation of the Red Hall Hotels website is that they should use more of their whitespace by using more images of the hotel so that the information they are talking about is more understandable as having an image of what you are talking about helps the reader understand the information easier as they have an example of what the hotel means when it is explaining information. The Red Hall also should include more information about who they are willing to cater to and advertise using a representation of their target audience as this is likely to draw more people to the hotel.

The Red Hall is also, in my opinion, more of a client based website than a server side website, the Red hall should have a small server so that they can save all of their customers information, within the guidelines of the data protection act while also focusing mainly on the client aspect of their website as this will likely increase the rate of people staying at their hotel instead of another, they should increase the server size when needed so that they do not waste large amounts of money on equipment that is not needed. The Red Hall hotel is more client based because it's a hotel, cliche, they want to advertise to their audience and they will need to make their website very attractive so that people stay there. The red hall could include a lower resolution version of their website for those who have a mediocre internet connection.

Lloyds
The Lloyds bank website is both a server side and client based website, this is because Lloyds has to keep all of their customers data like the account number, card number, address for replacement card and their contact details, however it also contains lots of information about the bank itself and how it operates, this includes photos of the different cards a Lloyds customer can get. Lloyds customers will also need a good internet connection to access their banking app/website, this is because the website/app will have to draw their information off of a server and then load their account summary, etc.

They also have an FAQ page where all their frequently asked questions are including links to the pages that customers need to visit and the contact details of the bank if they still have more questions. The design of the Lloyds bank website has had to be created with their main audience in mind which is those looking to open up an account with them, check their account information and balance. This means that Lloyds have had to design a website with that in mind, this means Lloyds would have to design a website that allows a potential customer to create an account easily while advertising to them so that they actually create an account with Lloyds. Lloyds would have to also create their website with their customers in mind, this means that the website must have a sign in button on their homepage with advertisements about new cards, etc.
